Chest Breathing Exercises Techniques

Health Tips, Health Facts, Coastal Breathing Technique

After completion of daily routine work, may be you have some questions like that, “I am feeling stressed or rushed or restless?

Most of us do at some time or another, but when it becomes a regular event it can start having a detrimental effect on our health. Breathing Exercise is a great antidote to these kinds of feelings, but the problem is that our lives are so busy nowadays it can be difficult to find the time to fit any in.

This types of breathing which is called Costal or Chest Breathing is characterized by an outward, upward movement of the chest wall. In chest breathing the expansion is centered at the midpoint and consequently it aerates the middle part of the lung most.

Since the lower part of the lung is most abundantly perfused with blood, we have that ventilation perfusion mismatch described earlier. Thus during resting periods chest breathing is less efficient.

Chest breathing exercises also requires more work to be done in lifting the rib cage, thus the body has to work harder to accomplish the same blood gas mixing than with diaphragmatic breathing, and the greater the work, the greater the amount of oxygen needed, which results in more frequent breaths.

Chest breathing technique is useful during vigorous exercise but it is quite inappropriate for ordinary, everyday activity. Since it is part and parcel of the fight or flight response it occurs when the individual is aroused by external or internal challenges or danger. As a result, chest breathing is likely to be associated with other symptoms of arousal like tension and anxiety.

Since there is a reciprocal relationship between breathing and the mind, chest breathing, if continued during rest periods, will lead to tension and anxiety, thus creating a vicious circle.

With chest breathing the breath is likely to be shallow, jerky and unsteady, resulting in unsteadiness of the mind and emotions. Until chest breathing is replaced by deep, even and steady diaphragmatic breathing, all efforts to relax the body, nerves and mind will be ineffective.

Health Tips & Benefits – Awareness for Dangerous Health Symptoms

To avoid/overcome dangerous health problems, just we have speak up when we think something is wrong.

Here is there are some medical symptoms which we shouldn’t ignore for our healthy life.

(1) Paralysis of the arms or legs, tingling, numbness, confusion, dizziness, double vision, slurred speech, trouble finding words, or weakness, especially on one side of the face or body.

These are signs of stroke-or a "brain attack"-in which arteries that supply oxygen to the brain become blocked or rupture, causing brain tissue to die.

Symptoms depend on which area of the brain is involved. If a large blood vessel is blocked, a wide area may be affected, so a person may have paralysis on one side of the body and lose other functions, such as speech and understanding. If a smaller vessel is blocked, paralysis may remain limited to an arm or leg.

Timing is urgent; fast treatment can potentially stop brain tissue death before permanent brain injury happens.

(2) Chest pain or discomfort; pain in the arm, jaw, or neck; breaking out in a cold sweat; extreme weakness; nausea; vomiting; feeling faint; or being short of breath.

These are signs of heart attack.

Not everyone who has a heart attack feels chest pain or pressure or a sense of indigestion. Some people, especially women, the elderly, and people with diabetes, get "painless" heart attacks, the doctors say. Being aware of "painless" heart attack signs is crucial: a very weak feeling, sudden dizziness, a pounding heart, shortness of breath, heavy sweating, a feeling of impending doom, nausea, and vomiting.

(3) Tenderness and pain in the back of your lower leg, chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood.

These are symptoms of a potentially dangerous blood clot in your leg, especially if they come after you've been sitting for a long time, such as on an airplane or during a long car trip. These signs can also surface if you've been bedridden after surgery.

Blood is more likely to pool in your legs when you're sitting or lying down for long periods of time, as opposed to standing and walking. If a blood clot forms in your leg as a result, your calf can feel swollen, painful, and tender to the touch; you should be evaluated. If you get sudden chest pain or shortness of breath, a piece of the blood clot may have broken off and traveled through the bloodstream to your lungs.

Health Fact-About Tai Chi & Tai Chi Benefits

Tai Chi & Tai Chi Benefits :-

Tai Chi is an internal Chinese martial art. It is often promoted and practiced as a martial arts therapy for the purposes of health and longevity. Tai Chi is considered a soft style martial art, an art applied with as much deep relaxation or "softness" in the musculature as possible, to distinguish its theory and application from that of the hard martial art styles which use a degree of tension in the muscles.

Variations of Tai Chi basic training forms are well known as the slow motion routines that groups of people practice every morning in parks across China and other parts of the world.

Traditional Tai Chi training is intended to teach awareness of one's own balance and what affects it, awareness of the same in others, an appreciation of the practical value in one's ability to moderate extremes of behavior and attitude at both mental and physical levels, and how this applies to effective self-defense principles.

Tai chi, sometimes called tai chi chuan, is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. To do tai chi, you perform a series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner. Each posture flows into the next without pausing.

Anyone, regardless of age or physical ability, can practice tai chi. It doesn't take physical prowess. Rather, tai chi emphasizes technique over strength.

Stress reduction through tai chi :-

(1) Reducing anxiety and depression.

(2) Improving balance and coordination.

(3) Reducing the number of fall.

(4) Improving sleep quality, such as staying asleep longer at night and feeling more alert during the day.

(5) Slowing bone loss in women after menopause.

(6) Lowering blood pressure.

(7) Improving cardiovascular fitness.

(8) Relieving chronic pain.

(9) Improving everyday physical functioning.

Pregnancy & Tai Chi:-

Tai Chi is also beneficial for pregnant women who have never done any forms of exercise before as it reduces the chances of these women injuring themselves. Other exercises, even yoga, involve a certain amount of moving that could be a problem for pregnant women in later trimesters.

Coping with changes in body size, lifestyle and work can be stressful for a pregnant woman. This is where the mediation portion of Tai Chi kicks in. Deep breathing and helping the mind to focus on the slow repetitive movements of the breathing, provides relief to these external changes. Tai Chi also teaches patience and enhancing such a quality would be beneficial especially when the baby arrives.

Cancer & Tai Chi :-

Those who promote the use of tai chi say that it helps to balance qi or chi - the vital energy or life force of the body. Balanced qi is said to prevent illness, improve health, and extend life expectancy. Tai chi also is based on the ancient theory of yin and yang and those who promote the use of tai chi for cancer patients say that balancing yin and yang helps patients to achieve inner harmony.

Health Care Facts-Sciatica & Causes of Sciatica

Sciatica
is a set of symptoms including pain that may be caused by general compression and/or irritation of one of five nerve roots that give rise to the sciatic nerve, or by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve itself.

The pain is felt in the lower back, buttock, and/or various parts of the leg and foot.

In addition to pain, which is sometimes severe, there may be numbness, muscular weakness, and difficulty in moving or controlling the leg.

Typically, the symptoms are only felt on one side of the body.

May be there are many causes of Sciatica, but I want to share main Four Causes of Sciatica.

(1) Piriformis Syndrome :-

This is the common cause of sciatic pain and is created when pressure is placed on the sciatic nerve by the piriformis muscle.

Muscle imbalances pull the hip joints and pelvis out of place and this changes the positioning of the piriformis muscle, which then places pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Whatever the case, muscle imbalances will cause major problems and are the underlying cause of piriformis syndrome.

(2) Herniated Discs :-

Pressure caused by a herniated or bulging disc.

A herniation is when a disc protrudes out from between the vertebrae and this can either be caused by an event like a car accident, or, by months or years of uneven pressure due to muscle imbalances.

This can sometimes cause sciatic pain, but it is also important to note that many people with herniated discs don't even experience pain or symptoms, and many don't know they have the condition.

(3) Spinal Stenosis :-

Pressure caused by spinal stenosis, which is a decrease in the space between the vertebrae. This is primarily caused by uneven pressure and compression due to muscle imbalances.

(4) Isthmic Spondylolisthesis :-

Pressure caused by Isthmic spondylolisthesis which is simply when a vertebrae slips or moves. This can sometimes pinch the sciatic nerve but often times people who have this condition don't have any sciatic pain, symptoms, or even know they have it!

As you can see, there is a trend here, in nearly every case of sciatica, muscle imbalances are the primary cause of the pressure being placed on the sciatic nerve.

If you are not sure which one of the four is causing your sciatica, I recommend you start with the basics. Most cases of sciatic pain are caused by muscle imbalances so if you begin to work on correcting any muscle imbalances you have, you should start to see improvement right away, and likely eliminate your sciatic pain in a few weeks or less!

Sciatica comes about either due to a traumatic event, muscle imbalances, or a combination of both. The event scenario is most likely the catalyst for sudden onset of sciatic pain. So what happens? When there is undue stress on the Piriformis muscle that stress causes it to go into spasm and then you have pain due to the Piriformis muscle putting pressure on the sciatic nerve.

Blood Glucose Test

Why is a blood sugar test done? :-

Diabetes mellitus is diagnosed based on a high level of glucose (sugar) in the blood.

Blood Sugar test, done fasting and 2 hours after breakfast, is used for the diagnosis of diabetes.

How is the test done? :-

(a) Fasting blood glucose:-

In this test, a person is asked to fast overnight, at least 8 hours, and the level of glucose in the blood is then checked.

(b) Post prandial (PP) blood glucose:-

This is tested two hours after having a meal. It serves as a challenge for the body to regulate the blood sugar after a meal.

Random blood sugar or glucose test is that which is done at any other time. The blood glucose can also be tested after giving 75 gm glucose by mouth (glucose challenge test).

This is useful for detecting borderline diabetes and a condition called "impaired glucose tolerance". Blood glucose tests are also needed for checking the control in diabetes.

What are the normal values? :-

Normal fasting plasma glucose levels are less than 110 mg/dl. Normal PP plasma glucose levels are less than 140 mg/dl.

What are the abnormal values? :-

A fasting plasma glucose level of more than 126 mg/dl indicates diabetes mellitus. A level between 110-125 mg/ dl is called "impaired fasting glucose".

A PP or random plasma glucose level of more than 200 mg/dl indicates diabetes mellitus. A level between 140-199 mg/ dl is called "impaired glucose tolerance".

A blood sugar exceeding the level of 200 mg/dl or higher generally indicates the presence of diabetes.

What is the role of insulin? :-

The body breaks down food into glucose (sugar) and uses it as a source of energy. Insulin helps the cells of the body to utilize this glucose for energy, and to store the excess in the liver for later use.

Thus insulin regulates the blood glucose (sugar) levels. In diabetics, the body does not produce enough insulin or does not use the produced insulin effectively. This results in a high level of glucose in the blood ("hyperglycemia").

Head Lice - One Insects in Hair

Head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) are parasitic insects that are found on the heads of people. Having head lice is a very common occurrence in the U.S. and they are spread by close physical contact, especially among children.

Head lice are usually found on the scalp near the neckline at the back of the neck and behind the ears.

There are three forms of head lice:-

Nit :- Head lice eggs are called nits. They are very difficult to see and are often mistaken for dandruff. They are usually found attached to the hair shaft.

Nymph :- The nit hatches into a baby louse which is called a nymph.

Adult :- The adult louse is very small, is tan to grayish-white in color, and has six legs. In people with dark hair, the adult louse will look darker.

Signs that your youngster may be infested with head lice:-

(1) A tickling feeling in the hair and on the scalp

(2) Itching on and around the head area

(3) Unexplained irritability

(4) Sores on the head caused by your child's scratching

How to rid the infested person of lice:-

(1) Visit your pharmacy and get a bottle of pediculicide (lice medicine) and follow the instructions.

(2) Have the affected person change into clean clothes.

(3) Run a fine comb through the hair every few hours, to remove the lice, nymphs, and nits.

Health Care Tips & Talks-About Bad Breath

Many people have a problem with bad breath (halitosis), but they have no idea what causes it or how to eliminate it.

In general, there are three possible reasons why a person might have bad breath :-

(1) Eating smelly foods:-

Aromatic foods such as onions, garlic, fish, peanut butter and others can leave a strong odor on your breath, but this type of bad breath is only temporary unless there are also other problems.

(2)Poor oral hygiene:-

Properly brushing, flossing and using mouthwash is essential for keeping bad breath at bay. Maintaining good oral hygiene is also very important for preventing the third (and most serious) cause of bad breath.

(3) A dental condition:-

Dental conditions such as gum disease, oral cancer, cavities, and/or bacteria on the surface of the tongue typically result in bad breath.

Unfortunately, these conditions cannot be remedied without the help of a dentist.

In a nutshell, brushing (including the tongue), flossing and gargling with mouthwash after every meal coupled with regular professional cleanings will prevent the most pervasive causes of bad breath.

Chewing gum helps reduce the intensity of bad breath by keeping the mouth moist, and many people also find relief by using toothpaste, mouthwashes and other oral hygiene products that are formulated specifically to combat persistent halitosis.
